The Dukes | Lancaster
The Duke's in Lancaster, formerly known as the Duke's Playhouse, is a professional producing theatre, currently producing six theatre productions a year. It also hosts outside companies and arts festivals.
Consisting of three auditoria, the largest (named "The Rake") and seating approximately 313, studio theatre "The Round" seating approximately 240 and a youth specific space, "DT3". The largest auditorium is also used for screening films. The theatre has a reputation for independent cinema, since 1986 the Duke's has also produced annual open-air, walkabout theatre productions at Williamson Park in the city every summer, thought to be the largest outdoor theatre event of its kind in the UK.
The Round is our beautiful, new 240 seat theatre space and, coincidentally, the seating is in the round! Occasionally this space also forms a horseshoe configuration on 3 sides.
The Rake is our 313 seat auditorium with raked stadium style seating and an end on stage. Fantastic full visibility is offered from all seats. This space is also used for our cinema screenings.
DT3 is our dedicated performance space for young people and can seat 112 on two sides and 69 if one side is used.
The Dukes Café Bar is open to all from 12 noon until late. With friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere don’t leave your visits to pre-show only. We have a good selection of soft drinks, bottled ales as well as Lancaster Beer on draught. If you are coming to see a film or performance why not arrive early and get a drink to take in with you? On Friday evenings we have free music in the bar – call box office for details of who is playing.
